Description

This is a graduate seminar for writers on writing place across genres. It?s also a course on literary California: its histories, ecologies, cultures, and futures. We will read a wide array of works on California and the U.S. West by contemporary writers of fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, and history. We will think about why and how writers evoke place as a creative means of understanding environment, culture, identity. Across the quarter, students will undertake sustained projects on place, as well as shorter fieldwork writings.
